When the Sun goes down

I can't make you love me. I can't make myself love you. But we can try to stand against the negativity of the world before it swallows us whole. Ready my dear?

Hi, I’m Dirk and this is a picture of me I took a few months back for a Tumblr called “Who Needs Feminism” (whoneedsfeminism.tumbrl.com) which set out to make the point that feminism was for everyone, which is something I believe, so I took this picture and submitted it. Of the 150 notes it got a handful came from women who felt that this statement contributed to the problem of gender inequality and that I wasn’t helping anyone by expressing it. At the time I made note of these complaints when I reposted the picture on my own tumblr, but did nothing more than say “Apparently there is some controversy in the notes about whether or not it’s legitimate for me to actually need feminism for this reason.”
Now that this image has found its way onto Facebook and attracted more attention that I’d ever expected it would, I feel I should provide a footnote to the point I was trying to make.
I believe that everyone will better off in a just society. Speaking as someone who enjoys virtually every privilege our society can offer, I still believe that I will benefit personally from an end to patriarchy, racism, poverty, homophobia, and every other form of injustice. Even though I am granted broad privileges by the injustice in our society, I don’t believe that I lose anything by giving them up for the sake of equality, but I believe that I would gain the world in return.
Injustice and inequity are alienating forces to me personally.  The advantages they offer me pale in comparison to the barriers they place between me and people I Love. Feminism is not something I believe in because I’m a “nice guy” who feels like saying I’m a feminist is some kind of charitable act. I actually feel deeply fucked up when a woman walking alone at night gives me a fearful glance or when capable women turn down opportunities because they feel they won’t be taken seriously.  Undoing this imbalance not only liberates women from their oppression, but also liberates men from their privilege… and we need liberation as much as anyone, perhaps more because it’s so hard for us to see it.
